Labview 2009 only pretends to install

Good morning,

I am attempting to install the student version of Labview 2009 on a Vista pc for use in IIT's robotics club.  The installer launches, gets about 10% through the 'initializing installer' phase, then skips immediately to the 'product installed' screen.  The installer reports that Labview is installed, but it is definitely not installed.  No errors or warnings are produced.  I do run the installation in administrator mode, I have Windows firewall disabled, and I disabled virus scanning software.

Do I need an updated install dvd?  How do I install a working copy of Labview?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

-Matt

Does this happen on other PCs as well? If so, then the DVD is probably corrupted. If not, then it must be something on your PC. Do you have any software installed that fiddles with optical drives, such as virtual CD drive mounting software? Do you have any software installed on the PC that may have installed copy protection software. These are notorious for screwing up just about everything. I would suggest trying to copy the files off the DVD onto the hard drive and running the installation from the hard drive.

Thanks for the response.  After posting the request, I did try installling onto an older XP machine, and it installed fine.  I don't have anything 'funny' running on the Vista machine that would intercept or confuse an installer, although Labview was installed once before and then removed.  Remind me not to let others install stuff for me...

My guess is that the removal process was sloppy, left something behind or damaged something, and is now confusing the installer.  I can't find any trace of Labview or National Instruments left on the Vista machine, so not sure what could be in the way. The real trick is to figure out what is causing the confusion, fix it, and then install Labview properly.

But what to fix?

Thanks again!

One thing you may want to try is to use MSIBlast. Do a search on the NI site and you'll find threads with this utility posted. There was also a PDF posted on its use. Warning: Use at your own risk.

Hello Matt,

Sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused you.

You can find information on MSIBlast here

Please let me know if you would be able to install the software successfully after performing MSIBlast

Thanks all,

Looks like MSIBlast did the trick.  If Labview is not properly removed, then there's a lot of MSI baggage that gets left hidden in the system which a typical 'search' doesn't find.  Using MSIBLast, I spent about 2 hours removing the hundred or so entries which caused Labview to think it was already installed.

After cleaning everything out, Labview was able to properly install again.

Take care,

--Matt
