NIPM Failure trying to add LabVIEW 2024 Q3 (64-bit)

Solved!
Go to solution

I am trying to add LabVIEW 24 Q3 (64-bit) to my personal PC to be consistent with the software I'm using at work.  Until recently, we (both work and home) were using LabVIEW 2019 (32-bit) and LabVIEW 2021 (32-bit), but with Windows 11 on the horizon (the Work machines have been "transitioned", but I haven't updated the home PC yet), my LabVIEW colleague-at-work started using LabVIEW 2024, and I've installed it at work, as well (though I also "upgraded" to 64-bit LabVIEW at that time, with no problem).  I'm reasonably certain that on at least one of those machines, the LabVIEW installation was done on before the transition to Windows 11.

So today, I downloaded the LabVIEW 2024 Q3 (64-bit) installer and went to work.  I selected LabVIEW, LabVIEW Real-Time, LabVIEW Vision, DAQmx, VISA, CompactRIO, IMAQdx, PXI, and as few "additional features" as possible (mainly those that support VISA, Vision, and the Compact "family").

This is what I got.  It hadn't gotten very far (I wasn't watching, but there were very few 2024 Versions listed, certainly no "LabVIEW (64-bit)" shown.  So I "tried again", same result.  I tried removing the few 2024 packages there were, and it offered to also remove lots of 2019 and 2021 products, so I said (politely) "No, thank you".

Is this even fixable?  Should I remove all National Instruments Software, then attempt to do a "reverse-install", 2024 (64), and 2021 (32), letting 2019 go bye-bye?

Before I hurt myself, I'll listen to sage advice.

I think I had the same problem with the sync services when trying to run an installer I created for a non LabVIEW computer.

The issue was that certain services could not be or would not shut down. I manually stopped a bunch of NI Services, like the Sync Service, and made sure they would not start up on a restart. After a restart or two and more manual stops of NI services, I was able to run the installer and it worked.

Thanks for the suggestion, McDuff.  I'm used to seeing more than a dozen NI Services running, but I currently show only nine, none of which is the Sync Service.  I'm going to take this as a signal that I (seriously) need to uninstall all NI Software and then reinstall 2024 and 2021 before I update to Windows 11 (I've got, somewhere, a Windows 10 VM with LabVIEW 2019, should I need it in the future ...).

Whew!  Despite a Stupid Move on my part (which I recognized before it was "too late"), the Uninstall/Reinstall move was a complete success.  My Laptop now has only LabVIEW 2024 Q3 64-bit and LabVIEW 2021 SP1 32-bit (both Professional), with Vision and Real Time, and 22 (!) NI Services (from NI Application Web Server (64-bit) to NI-RIO Server) installed, mostly Running with Automatic Startup.

The "Stupid Move" was to run Control Panel/Programs and Features only once (to remove National Instruments Software) instead of three times (National Instruments Software, NI Package Manager, then National Instruments Software, again).  Fortunately, I only "poked around" in the File system to see how many "National Instruments" folders there were (but didn't touch them before I remembered I had two more rounds, which went very quickly, of "Programs and Features" to do).
