Prompt user for invalid data

That makes no sense. Are you talking about 32 characters? That's an awfully long serial number. ๐Ÿ˜„

We have a very long thread with many messages. What is "this"?

"This" means the serial number and it's length.

Scanned through the thread, only one thing to add:

"Who's on first?"

At various times the length has been quoted here as 32bits, 8 characters, 4 bytes, 32 characters and many other variations. If it is just max 8 printable characters, use the code I linked earlier and change one diagram constant.

Please write an entire paragraph explaining your definition of "serial number", including:

  • min and max string length (e.g. empty string is not a valid SN)
  • Allowed characters (number, uppercase, lower case, special (e.g. %), etc.)
  • Valid patters (e.g. "4 numbers-4 letters")
  • Are some characters always the same?
  • Valid numeric range if scanned.
  • Need to match a certain regex?
  • What is the final datatype of the validated serial number output going to the caller code?
  • etc.

Then make a list of at least 10 valid serial number and a list of 10 similar, but invalid serial numbers so we can get a better idea.

The "I know it when I see it" method does not work in computing.

And, we are right back to my Regex and key filtering fSmiley Very Happy

Some days the irony amazes me.  "Prompt User for invalid Data"  Sounds like the OP has that down pat!

Yes, we are going in circles. I won't contribute more unless all my questions above are answered in detail.
