RT PC format Hard Disk Drive

Solved!
Go to solution

I am trying to configure an TOSHIBA laptop as an RT target PC. With the PC evaluate program I found out that is possible. But i cant instal the software because the laptop is not bootable via USB stick.   It can boot via an USB FDD but then only its shows the ETS loader and as soon it needs to access the FDD the kernel responds with warnings and errors ans stops.

So my question is: is there an DOS utility that can install the RT Disk Utility "PC Format Hard Drive Disk" ??

Hi Franzo,

Can you change the Laptop to boot from a CD? Alternatively, could you make a Windows Boot disk that could boot the PC in DOS but with CD/USB support.

Hi Andrew,

The laptop can also boot from bootable CD. And I have Windows95 boot FD with only CD support.

Dear Mr van Setten,

It is possible to make a boot CD with the measurement and automation explorer. Please refer to the following PDF manual.

Please be aware that the network chipset has to be supported.

Normally we strongly advise to use the network card which was delivered with the real time deployment bundle for desk top PC's, however this is a PCI version.

Hi Martijn,

I followed your link,  but I could not found anything on how to make a boot CD with MAX.

Hello Frans,

I found the following part at page 5 of the PDF file;

You can use a boot disk to launch the RT Module software that you install

on the hard drive of a desktop PC. If there is no RT Module software

installed on the hard drive, the desktop PC boots into safe mode, where you

can install software.

Create a desktop PC boot disk using NI Measurement & Automation

Explorer (MAX). Select
Tools»RT Disk Utilities»Create Desktop PC

Boot Disk in MAX to create the desktop PC boot disk.

Hi Martijn,

Now we are back at where we started, please read my first question.

My problem is that when I boot the laptop via USB FDD and when the ETS loader has finished loading the kernel, I get a messages like:

Warning Kernel.364530: Error initializing Floppy drive A:

So it looks that after the kernel is loaded from the USB FDD it looses contact with the USB FDD.

Hi Franzo,

Did you manage to make the bootable CD for RT? When the Kernel gives the warning, does it give you any options like "Abort, Retry and Fail" or does it just hang? If it gives you options, have you tried removing the disk and pressing retry?

Thanks,

Hi Andrew,

I didn't find any info on how to make a bootable CD for RT.

When I boot the "PC format Hard drive disk" I will be able to re-format the C: drive,  then it comes with the following messages:

Reinitializing FAT16 drive ... done.

Warning KERNEL.346530: Error initializing Floppy drive A:

Warning KERNEL.346530: Error initializing Floppy drive A:

Installing hdmon.bit to the hard drive...

Warning KERNEL.346530: Error initializing Floppy drive A:

Warning KERNEL.346530: Error initializing Floppy drive A:

Warning KERNEL.346530: Error initializing Floppy drive A:

Warning KERNEL.346530: Error initializing Floppy drive A:

error opening source file hdmon.bin

then it hangs

Hi Franzo,

I am not completely certain if this will work but could you create a bootable floppy disk and simply move all of the files to a CD? Did you manage to find the create boot disk options that were described earlier in this thread?
