Remote system disconnected after installing MAX 4.7.3

Solved!
Go to solution

Hello!

This topic is related to the topic you can find here

In order to repair the Regional Settings issue in Windows (XP in my case) I used the System Configuration 1.1.3 update and it seems to work. I changed the Regional Settings to my local and installed the update. Silverlight does not crash anymore, so that is fixed. However, this created a new issue:

Now my remote devices (NI-1742 and NI-1746) status is always "disconnected". The devices are connected to a different subnet than the development computer. Pinging their IPs showed that they are there. I can connect to the cameras using the Real-time Project. However, in MAX the remote system status remains "disconnected". I tried to delete and re-create the devices in MAX but that did not work either.

I also tried the latter with Windows firewall on and off and updated the software with NI Update Service. On an another computer, which has not had the update yet, I can connect to and modify the devices.

In addition, I completely reinstalled the development system, but the issue persists.

Kind regards,

Mart

Hi Mart,

What version of MAX did you have before you upgraded to SysCfg 1.1.3 (which includes MAX 4.7.3)?

One thing that may help is a Wireshark capture of you expanding Remote Systems in MAX. Download Wireshark and close MAX. Open Wireshark, and start a capture on your main ethernet interface (Capture->Start). Then, open MAX and navigate to the point where your remote devices show up as disconnected. Wait for about a minute, then stop the capture, and save it.

Please put this Wireshark capture in a .zip file, and place it on our FTP. To get to our FTP, open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) here: ftp://ftp.ni.com/incoming

In that .zip file, also include the IP addresses of the two systems that are showing up as disconnected. Let me know once you've placed the .zip on our FTP, and what the filename is. Thanks!

Hi Justin!

I updated from MAX v 4.7 to 4.7.3

The zip file is uploaded, it is called 20101014c.zip. I looked at the Wireshark report and noticed that even if I opened MAX and expanded Remote Systems and clicked on the tabs no query to the target systems' IP was made. This, however, was not the case with the working computer.

Kind regards,

Mart

Hey Mart,

In looking through the Wireshark captures, I see a number of references to other security software on your system. Can you double-check and make sure that any third-party firewalls have exceptions for MAX? Port 3580 should be opened, and verify that the NI System Web Server service is Started on your system.

Hey!

I checked if the NI System Web Server is enabled, is seems to be OK. I talked to my sysadmin and he told that there is no firewall on the network only Windows firewall, but that is disabled. We have not installed any other firewall software either. Also tried to disable the antivirus (Panda Cloud AV) just in case, but that did not change anything. This is a very strange situation. I guess I have to connect the cameras back to the same subnet as the development computer.

I will update if something changes.

Mart

You mentioned in your first post that you've tried deleting and adding this device to MAX... what exactly happens when you do this? Does it allow you to add the device, but it just shows up disconnected? Would you mind getting another Wireshark capture of this process (deleting and re-adding the devices)?

After doing this, please also obtain a MAX Technical Report from your system. Please zip up both the Wireshark capture and the technical report and place them up on our FTP.

A few additional questions: Do you have any other NI hardware on your network (or have access to any other NI hardware) besides those two Smart Cameras (e.g. Compact RIO, PXI Real-Time controller, etc.)?

Hello Justin!

When I delete and add targets, MAX adds them to Remote Systems category, but the device status is disconnected. I uploaded the information as you requested, the file is called WS20101019.zip.

At the moment, we do have NI WAP-3711 and NI WSN-9791 on the same network as the cameras, but the dev-computer under discussion is not connected with those.

Kind regards,

Mart J

Hi Mart,

Thanks for posting those captures. While I look into them, have you ever been able to see your smart cameras when connected on a different subnet? If so, what version of MAX were you using then?

Hi!

The thing is, when I connect the cameras to the same subnet as the dev-computer, the cameras are fine (with MAX 4.7.3 and local Regional Settings).

I can also connect to cameras with a computer that has MAX 4.7.2 (also tested with MAX 4.7). This, however requires that I change the Windows Regional Settings to US. Otherwise Silverlight crashes (described in the topic linked in the first post of current topic).

Kind regards,

Mart J

Hey Mart,

It looks like this may be related to a possible bug introduced in MAX 4.7.3. I've uploaded Juurma.zip to our FTP site. Please obtain this .zip file by navigating to ftp://ftp.ni.com/outgoing.

This .zip file contains a patched version of mxRmCfg.dll. First, close all NI software and stop the NI System Web Server service and all its dependencies (you can get to your services by going to Start->Run and typing in services.msc). Then, navigate to this directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\MAX\Bin

You will need to rename the existing mxRmCfg.dll to mxRmCfg.bak, and copy the new version to that location. Restart your system, open MAX, and see if you can connect to and view your targets.

If this resolves your issue, PLEASE post back in this thread indicating as much. If not, let us know and we'll continue to investigate. Note that items on our FTP server will be removed after 48 hours, so let me know if you're unable to get that file in time
