Saving my VI

I went to save my VI onto another drive (as a backup) I click "save as" - selected the drive (didn't change the VI name) and clicked ok. pretty simple right? I recieved a message that I don't have permision to the VI to save it (which is nut's since I have reapetly saved it to me C drive). I clicked on ok, closed the VI. I then went to drag it over to the directory I wanted or copy it and IT WAS GONE - deleted, no longer there...... I have looked trough my entire C drive and 5 weeks of work is now gone - is there anyway to recover this file?

That almost sounds like the file got deleted while you were working on it. Are you sure you don't have a virus, or something? Or perhaps a bad block on your HD? You can check to see if you have an autosaved version in your LabVIEW Data folder, contained in your "My Documents" folder. Other than that, you have a backup right? You do keep backups right? If you don't, well, think of this as a lesson learned the hard way.

First of all. DO NOT use the computer with the lost file(s), and do not install any software on your hard disk. You may find some undelete software on the internet. But success is very much depends on that no other program has written to the sectors used by your missing files. Also have you searched for files changed the day you lost your file(s)? It could have been saved with wrong name. Sorry to say it but your problem is self-inflicted. No previous versions or backup is not a good idea. All digital storage medium will sooner or later fail, and expect it to be sooner. That is my rule of thumbSmiley Wink

Good luck!

Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

I am still not convinced that this IS NOT a bug in Labview 8.5. I save, copy and back up in all my other programs, without a problem. Labview, there are is an abnormal methoud of saving (or "save as") and if you change the name of your VI under the Save as, it for some reason ALWAYS deletes the original. Ie. Motorcontrol.vi If you want to save that, but revision the work you just completed so you Save as Motorcontrol_A.vi and you select save as new file name - Motorcontrol.vi is now Gone!! Now in my actual case, I recieved and error "permission denied" ok...that's fine, but it still wiped out my original - which - agian I think is a bug. - SO I AM wondering if there is any Labview way - to recover that - yes I have an earlier version backup, but how can I back up to another drive if it keeps giving me an error and wiping out my orginal.

You must be selecting the "Rename" option in the Save As dialog box. This will delete the original and create a new file with the name you provide. I still don't think your problem is with LabVIEW.

I have never seen Save As for a new name delete the original file.

It is a bad idea to use the Save As menu to save a backup to a new location.  Why?  If you have multiple files open, you run the risk of cross linking your files between the backup location and your working location.  The best way to backup your work is to close down and save all your files.  Then copy your entire project directory to a new location using Explorer.

If you need to get your work back from the backup location, they should be uncorrupted files.  Close all your files and copy back whichever ones need to be replaced.

I was trying to figure out if there was a possibility for a delete to occur before saving, and the only thing I could think of was if you select "Rename" in the Save As dialog. To verify this I ran Filemon and I saw that the original file got deleted first.
