Spreadsheet file created using "Write Characters to File" doesn't open with Openorg 1.1.4 Spreadsheet

Thanks for the msg.  But I'm afraid saving the file as *.csv didn't help either, OO still opens it as a document.  But I'm uploading the data file here anyway as you requested it.  Thank you.

My copy of OO opens it in the spreadsheet.

Here is what I did.

1) I changed the extension to .csv
2) Launch OO.
3) In OO select File >> Open
4) In the File dialog select File Type = Text CSV (*.csv; *.txt) [This requires scrolling about half way down the File type list.]
5) Select the file Trial1SpSheet.csv
6) In the Text Import box select Separator Options: Separated by: Tab
7) Click OK and the file opens in the OO Spreadsheet.

Hey, thanks for that.  It works in the order you mentioned.  But if you were to go directly to the folder where the file is located and double-click it, it always opens as a text doc in OO, which is not the way you would want it to.  And it doesn't work that way with MS-Excel(?)

I agree with you that the .csv extenson should imply spreadsheet not word processing. I think that is something you should ask the OO people about.

Is this file something that you are sending to a customer (internal or external) or just something that you are using on a few machines?  If it is something for you (or a small team) simply change the file extention association to open anything with .csv with the spreadsheet application.

If it is something that you are sending to a customer and don't have that control, I don't have an answer.

Hope that this helps,

Bob Young

I'm using Open Office 1.9.122 right now and it seems to work quite well for this. Here is what I have done:

I renamed the file to have a .csv extension.
right clicked on the file and selected open with...
clicked the little box to "Always open with..."
navigated to scalc.exe
double clicked.

Now .csv files are always opened with scalc (the spreadsheet program for open office).

Any time that I double click on the .csv file, it now opens in Open Office Spreadsheet.

I tried renaming with the .ods (Open Document Spreadsheet) extension, but Open Office uses XML for saving and when it does not find the appropriate XML for the spreadsheet, it opens with Office Writer.

The other option is to save the data in XML format.
