Most manufacturer's do provide some sort of driver these days. They may not always be native LabVIEW though. IVI or Plug and Play are common and can be used with LabVIEW. Your instrument is old and someone along the way decided that a GPIB driver was good enough. With a little bit of work, you can get the LabVIEW functional over serial. As I mentioned, the SRQ is usually only used during a measurement. The functions in the driver for setting up the instrument should work okay. You'll have to replace any function that polls SRQ with something else. A fixed delay will probably be sufficient.
