why wont cwdss.exe start

I have a win 98 machine that cwdss.exe (datasocket server) will not start on. When I attemp to start it I get the windows hour glass flash for a fraction of a second then nothing. The machine is still running but no data socket server. All of my other machines, one Win 95, one win 98 and 3 Win 2000 work great together. I have checked to see if the TCP/IP drivers are installed and they appear to be working fine. Any thoughts?

Is the Win98 machine which works running 98SE? How about the Win98 machine which doesn't work?

If "SE" refers to Second Edition then yes. Both are running Win98 Second Edition 4.10.222A

This is a strange problem.

You know that you do not need datasocket server to run on all of your computers in order to communicate. You just need one datasocket server on your network for communications. You will probably need to configure that datasocket server with the datasocket server manager. By default only the localhost can create and write data items to the server. You will need to add the IPs of your remote computers to the list and restart datasocket server.

If you really need datasocket server to run on the 98 computer, then the only answer I have is software reinstallation. Start with LabVIEW and if that does not help, reinstall the entire OS. This is not pretty but it will resolve the problem.

I am new at this data socket server thing and no I didn't know about setting up one unit as a server. Probably my desk top unit used to monitor all of my workstations. I will try that next.
thanks

I did not realize you were new to this. Here is some more information.
Configuring a DataSocket Server

I have configured the Datasocket server many times. Let me know if you run into trouble.

If you need an overview, open LabVIEW >> help >> search the LabVIEW bookshelf and look for Integrating the Internet into Your Measurement System--DataSocket Technical Overview
