I am getting random re-boots with NI PCI-232/8 and LabWindows CVI 5.0.1.

The system was running fine with an 800Mhz Dell computer. The lease was up and I swapped in a 2.4GHz computer, now I am getting random re-boots. I re-installed all drivers and software from scratch and recompiled the executable. Still no luck. the re-boots are happening between 12 and 24 hours apart.

Thanks for your help.

- What operating system are your using?
- What version of NI-Serial are you installing?
- If you go into Control Panel»System»Advanced»Startup and Recovery and uncheck automatically reboot, you should get a blue screen instead of rebooting. What does the blue screen say?
- Does your computer automatically go into standby or hibernate? If so, you should try turning those options off.

RayK, Thanks for your response.

Here are my answers;

- What operating system are your using?
Win2k Pro
- What version of NI-Serial are you installing?
1.5
- If you go into Control Panel»System»Advanced»Startup and Recovery and uncheck automatically reboot, you should get a blue screen instead of rebooting. What does the blue screen say?
I will check this. The re-boot happens about 12-24 hours apart, so it might take a while to answer this one.
- Does your computer automatically go into standby or hibernate? If so, you should try turning those options off.
No. I have the PC setup to never hibernate or go into screen saver.

Check if the same thing happens if
1) you use your native com ports?
2) you just have the computer on and the program is not running?

I think I have it narrowed down. I am using a USB to RS232 adapter (I need 10 serial ports - PC has 1) I removed the USB to RS232 adapter & added a second NI PCI-232/8 to the system. The program has not crashed for 36 hours now. I will let it run over the weekend and check it Monday for a real test.

Was it a NI USB serial device?

"Was it a NI USB serial device?" No. It was an IOGEAR. I removed it and its driver, added a second NI PCI-232/8 and have had no problems in almost a week.

Thanks for your help.
