Is there a way to get an indication/notification that an email has been successfully sent?

After the mail is sent, you will see an event in Alarm Windows.

I have the alarm window set to display just alarms.
My customer does not want to see all of the events, just alarms in this window.
Can I use NI MAX and apply a filter to see the email events?

You can create an Alarm/Event Browser ActiveX object to display just the mail event.
