FIFO overflow error using the NI 1429 frame grabber

This knowledge base article has recently been updated (august 11th). The info is quite interesting.

NI is still working on the issue.

After a long struggle and many tests with different workstation from many brands, NI Vision team could find a top of the range workstation PC that will not show the FIFO overflow failure at high rates with NI PCIe 1429 : HP xw9400 does the job well.

A big thank to the Vision Hardware team for their support on this issue 🙂

I have also been working on the this issue with the vision team.  My issue is that you shouldn't have to buy a certain machince for the board to work.  We also use BITFLOW framegrabbers and they have yet to show the issue.

I am not sure whether i could ask this question over here, but still i make my effort.

We recently ordered a photonfocus cameralink camera (MV-D1024E-160-CL-12). The camera website suggested the use of PCIe-1429. However, after reading different articles in the forum, i am not able to figure out. Is the FIFO problem sorted out. Which motherboard will be suitable. Our company has all dell supplies. Could any expert over here who are using cameralink type high speed cameras(going over 1000fps) and using 1429 make a suggestion?

Is there any other problem that is still persisting?

Is there any other type of NI cards that could do the same job?

If you have short deadline, I suggest you contact NI and mention this issue to find a PC with which you will not see this issue.

If you are in no rush I strongly suggest you wait for NI to ship a replacement board for the PCIe 1429 ; since this board is specific for high acquisition rate and doesn't work with up to date PC I can't imagine NI is not going to replace it soon. Again, contact them, tell you sales rep about this issue and try to find out more about their plan.

Hope this helps

We had to make some BIOS modifications to get one of machines to work better with the 1429

Here are the BIOS settings we modified to get the 6600 working:

  • Disable "Runtime Power Management"
  • Disable "SATA Power Management"
  • Change "Idle Power Savings" from Extended to Normal
  • Change "Idle Power Savings (C2 Extended)" from Extended to Normal

You can wait for the NI-PCIe 1433 which has a bigger FIFO and should solve some of the issues people have been experiencing.
