ultrasound sensor layout

Hi everybody!

I'd like to make a traffic measuring instrument installed in a passageway of a university building where cars, vans and bikes pass by, as well as people. I was thinking would one sensor on the wall be enough, or two sensors on opposite walls scanning the cross-section of the passageway would provide additional data that worths puttering with it?

The range of an SRF04 ultrasonic sensor (that I'm planning to use, with an NI myDAQ) would cover the passageway, but with two I thought I could define the thickness of objects, or something like that to help categorization. What do you suggest?

Hi Grasshopper and welcome to NI Forums!

I'd say that the more data you have, the better, even if the data is redundant. I would say go for more sensors, if you have the option to, since you'll probably have an easier time in counting and identifying traffic with more input, plus you can double-check yourself this way.

The only thing I'd add that if you can detect the whole passageway from one side,  I would rather put both sensors on the same side but with different angles. This will help you with identification, which I think is the ore complex part of the application.

This is just my two cents tho..

Kind Regards:
