Visual Studio 2012 crashes at startup after installing Measurement Studio 2013

Hi,

History:

VS2012 (with Update 4) has worked without problems for a few months.

Installation of Measurement Studio 2013: at first, everything is ok.

Reboot of the PC: VS2012 crashes at startup, showing the splash screen, "not responding"

Deinstallation of Measurement Studio: VS2012 is working again.

Re-Installation of Measurement Studio: VS2012 is crashing again.

Repair-Installation of Update 4 of VS2012: VS2012 is working again ... until a reboot of the PC.

Starting VS2012 in SafeMode: working, but i cannot use Measurement Studio in this mode (of course).

PC is Windows 7 Professional 64Bit, Service Pack 1

I also reinstalled VS ... without success. Any other ideas?

Log of eventviewer has two entries, see attached File

Hello jkrt,

I would like you to check the installation requirements for your visual studio 2012 from the following link.

You have to fulfill the requirements on page 2 and 3 under " Installation Requirements for Visual Studio 2012 Support"

http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/373085j.pdf

Please check if you fulfill everything and let me know if you do, then we could go deeper into it

Regards Michael

Hi,
I think we should try is to repair-install the .NET framework on your machine. To do that, I'd first recommend trying this tool provided by Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135

And if that doesn't work, Microsoft also provides a more manual method here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306160

Hi, Jochen

Do you have another version of Visual Studio you could use to attach to the crashing devenv process? If so, could you create a crash dump of devenv for us and upload it to ftp://ftp.ni.com/incoming? If you create the crash dump, please make sure to save the crash dump with heap information. The resulting crash dump should be large (on the order of GB in size).

Thanks!

Hi

i made the repair of the .NET Framework, without success.

I have no other version of VS, but maybe the attached files created by the  system from the crash are helpful? Would it work to install a free express edition of another Version to do the debug?

Actually i was optimistic to report good news this morning: yesterday i deinstalled the update 4 from VS2012. After the deinstallation it worked, even after some reboots. But now, the next day: still the same. Strange ...

Jochen

Hey,

where their any updates during the night? Maybe it updated itself to the updateversion 4 again?

Sounds really strange that it worked and over night it changed

Michael

Hi,

There were no updates during that night, but some during last night. And I'm not sure if the update 4 really is responsible for that behaviour:

Yesterday after the crash I installed Update 4 again: it worked. Reboot: it worked.

Starting System right now: it is crashing again.

Currently  there are 3 Updates on the system related to VS:

KB2707250 (The Update 4)

KB2781514

KB3002339

With KB3002339 an issue with ASP.NET will be fixed. Well....i'm not using ASP.NET, just a step in the dark: i made a repair installation of this update and it is working again. How long? Maybe even god doesn't know ...

Hi, Jochen

I've taken a look at the crash dump you sent. While it doesn't give me an immediate reason for the crash you're seeing, it has given me some clues as to why it might be happening. I'm going to work today to try to induce the behavior you're seeing, and I will update you when I have some results.

Thanks!

Hi, Jochen

I have a few more questions:

  • Which edition of Visual Studio 2012 are you using?
  • Are you using a localized version of Visual Studio? If so, which language?
  • Are you using a localized version of Windows? If so, which language?

I would assume the answer to my questions is German, but I want to be sure before we try to set up a system to reproduce this issue.

Thanks,
