Hi Bill,
The ibwrt and ibrd are ibic commands, which are the lower level functions for GPIB. They are usually what the drivers call to communicate with the GPIB devices. I would say that the best option as to see why your program wasn't working is to attach both the NI-SPY captures, one of MAX working and the other of your original program not working.
