E-Series Diagnostic Utility gives Error 10243

NI-DAQmx recognizes and works well with my PCI-6024E but Tradional NI-DAQ does not recognize board.

E-Series Diagnostic Utility returns "Error 10243 occurred at cwdaq. The driver could not locate or open the configuration file, or the format of the configuration file is not compatible with the currently installed driver."

No *.DAQ files can be found on root drive (including C:/Windows).

MAX 3.1 repeated installed and un-installed (includes Traditional NI-DAQ 7.3.0f1 & NI-DAQmx 7.3.1f0) does not help.

Un-installing and re-installing PCI-6024E in Device Manager does not help.

Running Windows XP Home Edition, SP 2, logged in as user with administrator privileges. Also running Norton Antivirus, Norton Firewall, Norton Intrusion Detection. No messages of logs from security software.

Next move: un-install NI software, turn off security software and reinstall.

Question: is it necessary to be logged in administrator when installing, or is a user with administrator privileges sufficient?

Question: Why do I not have a configuration file?

Thanks!

Hello GDR,

Administrator privileges should be sufficient.

When you say repeated MAX uninstall/reinstalls does not help, are you uninstalling NI-DAQ as well? Try only uninstalling your current version of NI-DAQ, then download and install NI-DAQ version 7.3. Once you have the drivers loaded, install your PCI-6024E. It may be that the configuration file was lost during one of the uninstall/reinstall steps. Starting with a fresh install of NI-DAQ should fix the problem.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks for the suggestion Sean C.

I used complete un-installs of ALL NI software. The installer was version 7.3.1. If the original download was corrupted then I would hope that the installer would detect that. I will try starting from scratch.

OK, I've done the following and Traditional NI-DAQ still does not even show up under "Devices and Interfaces" in MAX:

1) Uninstall of ALL NI software using the usual Windows Add/Remove Programs.

2) Removed the PCI-6024E and checked it in a different computer. Traditional NI-DAQ recognizes it. NI-DAQmx in current computer has seen PCI_6024E. HARDWARE IS GOOD!

3) Searched for files containing DAQ, NI or National and manually deleted them.

4) Downloaded fresh copy of NIDAQ731CD1, extracted and installed Traditional NI-DAQ only. I see NO DIFFERENCE between this the prior sets of files. Shut down computer.

5) Installed PCI-6024E. Started computer, allowed card to be recognized.

6) Started MAX. Card is not only not recognized by Traditional NI-DAQ, but My System / Devices and Interfaces does not have a line for Traditional NI-DAQ.

7) Went to Device Manager. Data Acquisition Devices / PCI-6024E is listed in good condition. Oddly enough the Properties for this devices show Driver Date and Driver Version as "Not Available". IS THIS CORRECT?

WHAT IS MY NEXT MOVE?

A) I counted +175 Registry values containing "National". No telling how many more DAQ entries there are. DO I HAVE TO MANUALLY REMOVE THESE?

B) After supposedly unintalling NI software I found A LOT of directories, files and registry values left behind. I'm guessing that one of these is bad and is being inherited by the new installation. HOW DO I REMOVE EVERYTHING? Is there a utility available that wipes EVERYTHING (short of reformating the drive)?

You can probably tell by the capitalized words that I'm getting irate. I've spent a couple of days working on this and am disappointed.

I get the following message after running the "Online E Series Diagnostic Utility: Self Test":

NI-DAQ Version: 6.9.3 (PASS)
Resetting Device 1: Please Wait. . .

Error 10243 occurred at cwdaq: The driver could not locate or open the configuration file, or the format of the configuration file is not compatible with the currently installed driver.

FAIL: Device 1 has failed the Device Detection and Resource Test

Why does the online test report the NI-DAQ Version to be 6.9.3 while the Traditional NI-DAQ version is reported by MAX as 7.3.0f1?

Next move: Uninstall 7.3 and install 6.9. Hopefully the files will be in synch then. Still shooting in the dark.

Hello GDR,

I am sorry to hear that this has caused you so much trouble. We have a utility available which will remove all NI Software from your computer. This utility, msiBlast, can be found at ftp://ftp.ni.com/outgoing/. Please download and unzip msiBlast.zip. When you run this, select the "Remove all NI Software" option. This should get rid of the files which Add/Remove Programs did not.

Once you have run msiBlast, reinstall your software, LabVIEW first, then NI-DAQ. Please let me know if you continue to have difficulties after this step.

Sincerely,

Thanks Sean C. for the suggestion.

Unfortunately msiBlast does not recognize any NI Installers. This was after uninstalling all NI products, then manually deleting C:/Program Files/National Instruments. Did I remove a file that msiBlast depends on? I'll try installing Traditional NI-DAQ, then unstalling and immediately running msiBlast.

Hello,

MsiBlast will look for any NI Software currently installed on the machine. If you have already uninstalled the software, then msiBlast will not find anything to uninstall. Once you install NI-DAQ, run msiBlast and it should uninstall NI-DAQ and all other files associated with NI-DAQ. Let me know if this still does not help.

Thanks Sean C. for the idea, but msiBlast didn't work. The details....

Installed NI-DAQ 6.9.3. I chose this because it was the bogus driver that was being reported and I wanted msiBlast to be sure to get it. I also chose 6.9.3 to see if sychronizing the files would fix the problem. Install worked but when MAX 2.2 was ran it gave the message:

"Unable to open a connection to the server. The configuration file, config.mxs, or the entire installation may be corrupted. Delete or rename the configuration file which is located in the same directory as nimax.exe. If that doesn't resolve the problem, please reinstall the program or search the knowledge base".

Renaming config.mxs didn't fix the problem, so I ran msiBlast. Seemed to work. Shut down computer, removed card, and restarted.

Installed Traditional NI-DAQ 7.3.1 only. Shut down computer, installed card. Restarted. MAX starts without complaining. Traditional NI-DAQ is not listed under My System: Devices and Interfaces, PCI-6024E not seen. No change from before.

In the past LabView 7 Express Evaluation Software may have been installed and uninstalled. Should I install that product so msiBlast can see and remove it?

I just tried the Online E Series Diagnostic Utility: Self Test again. Got the same error message as before, despite using msiBlast:

"NI-DAQ Version: 6.9.3 (PASS)
Resetting Device 1: Please Wait. . .

Error 10243 occurred at cwdaq: The driver could not locate or open the configuration file, or the format of the configuration file is not compatible with the currently installed driver.

FAIL: Device 1 has failed the Device Detection and Resource Test"

Could this message be a bug in the Self Test? Has it been updated for NI-DAQ 7.3.1? Either it or msiBlast is messing up.
