Module for encoder measurement?

Solved!
Go to solution

I was thinking of this as well http://sine.ni.com/ds/app/doc/p/id/ds-86/lang/en. The problem with this is that it gives 5.25 V as an output if you are not sourcing current and my encoder need 4.75 but then they say it will not provide enough voltage to the encoder and extra power supply is needed.

Thanks.

I think you'll run into the same problem as the link you posted. That card isn't able to produce enough power to drive the encoder, and I can't find any other Digital I/O module capable of it either. The 9191 has built in counters, so essentially you'll just need a digital input card to read the lines. Any of the following cards will be able to use those counters:

  • 9401
  • 9402
  • 9411
  • 9421
  • 9422
  • 9423
  • 9435
  • 9472
  • 9474
  • 9481
  • 9485

I didn't check to see if they're all capable of digital input though. Make sure you verify that.

Then I will probably choose 9401. Since I will need battery to power the Ni 9191, I will use some of it to power the encoder as well.

That sounds like a good way to go. Just make sure to step that 12V source down to 5V for the encoder so the output stays within the range of the card.

Thank you  for your time and thought on this topic. I will inform about my progress once I get everything togather and working.
