PCI-6281 burned when starting up the computer

Hi,

We have a PCI 6281 Multifunction DAQ card that has what appears to be a fried transistor (marked as D80, picture attached). It was working fine for several months when we had connected it to the PCI slot of a Dell T1700. However we then connected it to a PCIe to PCI adapter. The adapter then had a chip burn out on it. Following this incident, We decided to test the card itself by connecting it back to the PCI slot that it was previously working in. After turning on the computer we noticed smoke from the computer. After pulling out the power we discovered that the card's D80 component was completely burnt. Does anyone know how this could have happened? Also we were wondering what exactly this component did. We are currently assuming it is a transistor but are not sure what it does.

Hey John,

Issues like this are pretty hard to diagnose because there could be many causes for something like this. My guess is that this could have been due to a faulty adapter or an improper connection. I say this because the card was working fine when plugged into the PCI slot of the Dell T1700. One option could be to RMA the product. This could help determine what part of the card is burned. You can do this by calling in to 1-866-275-6964.
