Problem with IRQ levels when configuring legacy board in MAX

I'm trying to use a AT-AO-6 board in LabView 4.1 on a machine running Windows 98.  When I "test resources" for the board in MAX, I get the message "The device is not responding to the first IRQ level."  I think I have the correct driver installed.  What might be the problem and how can I fix it?

Hi sheldons,

It sounds like your NI-DAQ is expecting a different IRQ jumper setting on your AT-AO-6 board. I have included the link to the Windows 98/95 troubleshooting guide and you can find the section about the IRQ settings. The error you describe is the same as the one described in the troubleshooting guide.

I have also included the link to the product manual where you can find the section titled: 'Interrupt Selection' in 'Board Configuration' under Chapter 2. This section describes how you can change the jumpers for the interrupt setting.

Hi Steve,

The IRQ levels on the board are the same as the settings shown in Windows device manager and in MAX.  We are also running a LabWindows program on the same PC using the at-ao-6 board, and there are no problems.  Is there any reason why the LabView programs would expect different IRQ levels?

 Thanks for your help.

Hi sheldons,

Please check to see that the card is fully seated in its slot. You can also check the BIOS of the computer. Enter the BIOS at boot up and check the PCI configuration. It is possible that all the IRQ's and DMA's are assigned to PCI-PnP and any ISA board would have issues with this configuration. Change the IRQ from PCI-PnP to ISA/EISA and that is going to allow an ISA board to use the IRQ or DMA that you changed.

What drivers and versions do you currently have installed on the machine? I am most interested in NI-PAL and NI-DAQ. You can check this through Measurement and Automation Explorer. Are you able to run a LabVIEW program using the card? It sounds as if you are able to use the card through LabWindows. Was this device ever working on this computer in MAX?

Hi Steve,

The card is in the slot correctly.  Upon boot-up the only options I have for PCI settings are PCI/ISA PnP or Legacy ISA.  The IRQ levels for the board were set on PCI/ISA PnP.  I changed them to Legacy ISA, but that didn't help.

The drivers installed are Traditional NI-DAQ 7.1.0f1, NI-DAQmx 7.1.0f1, and NI-PAL 1.7.0f0.  Let me know if I need updates on these drivers.  I don't think we have used MAX on this computer before, and we have only used LabWindows with this system.

Thanks,

Sheldon

Hi Sheldon,

Can you try to run a LabVIEW example to see if you still have this error? I am interested to see how it works with LabVIEW since it does work with LabWindows. Your drivers seem to be ok. What is the IRQ number that you are trying to use for the card? I have seen some issues using specific IRQs such as 6, 9, or 14. What is the model of computer that you are using?
