Problem with cDAQ9172 - Active Light Remains - Not Recognized by System

I am having trouble with my cDAQ9172 hardware.  When I turn it on the two LEDs (Ready and Active) flash green but then the Active LED turns amber as if it is retrieving data.  I have tried using the M&E Explorer to solve the problem but my computer can't even recognize the device.  I have tried cycling the power, with and without modules plugged in and with and without the cDAQ connected to my computer.  This has happened in the past and I had to exchange the hardware.  If anyone else has ran into this problem and has a solution other than replacement please let me know- this would save very valuable time and my confidence in NI products.

Hello Stephen,

I have some questions about your issue. Have you tried using another USB cable or connecting the device to another computer?Has the device ever worked? If it used to work, what happened before it stopped working? Was there a power surge or any other environmental incidents?

The answers to these questions will help to diagnose exactly what is going on with this device.

Regards,
Dan King

We are having the same issue with a C-DAQ 9178.  After we had collected a dataset and were reviewing it, our computer completely shut down.  Now the Active and power light remain on whenever the C-DAQ is connected to power.  When The C-DAQ is plugged into the computer, it is not reconized, or even acknowledged by the computer.  Any suggestions would be greatly apprechiated.

Thanks

Hello Rainman,

I would suggest that you follow what Dan_K suggested. You mentioned that your computer shutdown when the device failed. It is possible that some external factor such as a surge may have caused your computer to shutdown and may have also damaged your hardware.

I have 2 additional suggestions to Dan_K post. Check the power supply and make sure it is providing the correct voltage and current. Also you can test the hardware on another computer to determine if the issue is isolated to one computer.

Hi,

I know it is 6 years later but I am having the same problem (Active amber light, daq not recognized by device manager).

The lab where I am working had two cdaq-9172 that haven't been used in a while. I start using one of them and everything run smooth until I got this problem. The daq is not recognized in any other computer (I have tried in other lab's computer and in my personal laptop), I have also tried different cables (both USB and power) that worked in the other daq, but none of these actions solves the problem. I do not remember if there was any power surge or shutdown at the moment the first daq stopped working.

But, today, the other daq (that was also working OK) had the exact same problem. In this case, it stop working while I was using it. There was not shutdown or power surge that I know (other devices running simultaneosly are OK). So now I have two daq that are not working.

Do you have any suggestion to fix the problem?

Thanks,

Ignacio

Hi Igan,

To clarify, when you say your cDAQ is not working, do you mean that both cDAQs aren't seen in NI MAX as well as Windows Device Manager? Additionally, what version of DAQmx are you using?

One user had a similar issue with the cDAQ 9174, and solved it by connecting the USB cable first, then switching off power to the cDAQ and switching back on again. (https://forums.ni.com/t5/Multifunction-DAQ/cDAQ-9174-USB-Device-Not-Recognised-NI-9425-NI-9476-NI-92...)

Another user was able to reproduce the issue on this link after a power cycle not necessarily caused by power loss: http://forums.ni.com/t5/Multifunction-DAQ/cDAQ-9172-USB-is-not-recognized-after-PC-power-is-cycled/t...

Other issues have also occurred with HP PCs, can you detail your setup for me?

Thank you,

Clay

Hi Clay,

Thanks for your response. Yes, the cDAQ is not recognized neither by NI MAX or Windows Device Manager. I have been using DAQmx 16.0.1 and later I upload it to 17.1. and both versions worked (initially). I tried going back to 16.0.1 but that did not solve my problem.

I have tried the USB connection order (and any other order possibility I could think about), but thad does not solve my problem.

I have tried the device manager solution, but I cannot find my device. I only have one USB Root Hub and is not my device. I have tried different power cycles sequences (pc and daq), but non of them solves it.

My set up is:

DELL PC (not HP), OptiPlex 7040, Windows 10

We have the system running also in a PLC with Windows 7. (The connection problem is the same in both PC and PLC)

The software versions in both systems are:

Labview 2016, MAX 17.0, DAQmx 17.1

The cDAQ has three NI 9239, one NI 9263 and one NI 9208 modules connected. This last one is connected to a NI 9923 front mount terminal that receives power supply from a NI PS-15 power supply, 24VDC. The system is installed in our hydraulic lab where the temperature is around 30 ºC and humid.

Best,

Ignacio

Hey Ignacio,

Can you try two things for me:

     1. Check to see if Device Manager misplaced the device in another drop down menu

     2. Try using the rear USBs on the desktop computer rather than the front-facing USB slots

Thanks,

Clay

Hi,

I have tried every USB slot on the computer, and the Device Manager does not recognize a new device (of any type) when I connect or disconnect the cDAQ.

Ignacio,

What happens if you try the cDAQ on a different computer. Does that computer detect a new device being plugged in? This could help rule out device damage.
