Win2k "Unsafe removal of hardware" error for USB DAQ

I am using MAX 2.2 and a Dell notebook running windows 2000 SP3. I tried to configure a DAQ device in a school lab but received frequent errors. (I don't remember the model for the DAQ, but it used USB and had about 50 terminal blocks with digital I/O and some analog, if that helps... I can find out if needed). When I first plugged it in to my USB port, windows discovered it and installed drivers. It said drivers were installed when I checked under the windows device manager. When I opened MAX and refreshed, windows said "unsafe removal of device," as if I had physically unplugged the device. It would keep doing this continually without me doing anything else. I rebooted multiple times with and without the devi
ce plugged in upon boot. Every time I tried to use MAX, it produced the same error. The power supply to the DAQ device was fine, and the DAQ system worked with other computers. Even after the error messages subsided and I was able to access the DAQ's test panel, there was a fatal error saying that it was not present. I don't currently have access to the lab, so I am writing this from memory, but it appears there is a software problem somewhere.

More information...

It is a DAQPad-6020E, and the error code is -10402

I uninstalled 6.1 and all components, and installed 6i; the same problem occurs when I access MAX (2.0)--windows throws "unsafe hardware removal" messages. I have tried multiple DAQPads, all producing the same problem, so it must be software. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device through windows. No luck.

HEllo;

I think that, at this point, the best test you can do is to install NI-DAQ on another machine, preferrebly a machine that doesn't have any NI Software in it, and try to hook up the device to that machine.

If the same problem happens, most likely the device is damaged. If the computer recognizes the device as well as MAX, the other computer probably has a corrupt Software install and the best bet is to uninstall everything, clean the windows registries, and to reinstall only NI-DAQ.
