Ultiboard groundplane split

I've followed the directions in Ultiboard 10's help file to split a groundplane with the "split polygon" tool, but I can't make it work. I also don't see the effect of choosing to widen or narrow the split when ending the command.

Hi popman:

One reason you might not be able to split a plane is if you placed a Copper Polygon (Place >> Shape >> ANY_SHAPE), instead of a Copper Area (Place >> Copper Area, or Place > Powerplane). It is a little confusing, but you can only split copper areas, not copper polygons.

From the way you the described the expected result, I think you might have misunderstood how the splitter works.

a. After selecting Design >> Polygon Splitter, click where you want to begin the splitting. Then move your mouse, and the splitter will follow your mouse, showing you where the split will occur.

b. Clicking adds additional vertices to the path, so you can define an arbitrary path to split.
You can also change the thickness of each segment, by entering a different value on the Draw Settings toolbar, or right-clicking, and selecting Widden or Narrow.

c. Once you have completed defining the path, press Esc, or right-click and click Cancel.

Tip: You will notice that by default, you can only split at 45 degree angles. Ultiboard will allow one of four restrictions for placing lines, but the options are not visible on the default user interface.

Select Options >> Customize User Interface... Then on the Commands tab, in the Categories list, select Place. In the Commands list, you will see Place 45 degree lines, Place all angle lines, Place diagonal lines, and Place orthogonal lines. You can drag these to any menu or toolbar you like, and then toggle between modes.

A word of caution, this affects placing all lines (including lines on the silkscreen, and copper traces), so make sure you only allow what you are able to manufacture!

If you have placed a shape instead of an area... you can select the shape and then select Design >> Shape to Area, in this way you will 'transform' the shape into a copper area that you will be able to split with the Polygon Splitter.

Thanks for your help. I was able to split a groundplane on a new layout using the same technique I had tried to apply to an older Ultiboard 10 layout. Intersting that it worked as expected on the new layout, but I still can't make it work on the older layout. I had removed some copper lands from the groundplane prior to trying to split the plane; I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem I experienced. I really don't need to split the groundplane on the older layout, but I wanted to do this as an exercise for future layouts.

Is this a feature that has just been fixed on the most recent update? Do you provide release notes to list any feature changes and/or bug fixes with each new release? If so, where can I view them?

You can see the release notes if you go to the v10 installation directory, look for the documentation folder, and inside you will see the HTML files for release notes... changes and fixes are listed there. In my computer is:

C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Circuit Design Suite 10.0\documentation\Readme_eng.html

I would still like to see if I can identify why the older file would not permit you to use the polygon splitter. If possible, could you attach the file (if it contains any confidential information, just remove the components/nets, leaving the power plane unmodified)?

Thanks,

I found that I could split a groundplane on the older file if I start at the edge of the board. Whenever I try to split at any place other than the edge, Ultiboard interprets my action as an insertion of a trace segment. I've attached the file with all nets removed (except net 0). Note that I have placed ground planes on the top and bottom layers of the board.

Hi Popman,

I see the problem with the polygon splitter in your file and the work around is to delete the copper plane and then replace it again.  I will forward your file to R&D and let them have a look at it.
