Why does voltage change when I put a resistor in parallel?

Solved!
Go to solution

Hello all,

I have observed something that seems quite strange and that I do not understand. I am running Multisim 10.1.1.

I have a sinusoidal voltage source that is full-wave diode rectified with a parallel RC network for the purpose of getting 120VDC, which has all worked just fine. I am measuring the DC voltage with a voltmeter. Crazy thing is, when I put a resistor in parallel with this 120VDC output, the voltage changes drastically. For example, when I put a 1kohm resistor in parallel with the 120VDC output, the voltmeter reading falls drastically to 0.835V.

Obviously if I perform this test with a simple 120V DC source, the voltmeter reading stays steady at 120VDC.

Does anyone have ANY idea as to why this is happening? I'm totally out of ideas. Thanks so much for any help in advance!

Sorry for the frequent posts, I was not thinking clearly last night when I posted this question. Simple voltage divider problem. Sorry again!
