Express PCI card causes conflict w/ethernet card

Solved!
Go to solution

I was able to install the MXI card and get it to work without any issues.  Connecting the PCI chassis and powering it up before the CPU (in fact when I powered up the PXI chassis, the CPU came on as well) let the card register and still let me connect to the network.  Each one of the modules installed in the PCI chassis was recognized by the CPU through the MXI card and asked to have the driver installed....it works!!!! THANKS NI....you guys rock......

bad news....I disconnected the PXI chassis and had the CPU re-booted...it failed again with the same errors as last time...this will not work for me as sometimes the machines are automatically re-booted by IT and if the chassis is not connected or powered up, I will get the error again....is there another solution?

Jimmy,

The problem with booting without a chassis connected is that the PC detects something in the PCIe slot but it can't communicate with it.   That's because the PCIe card is passing the signals to the chassis directly.

There's another version of the PCIe card that includes a PCIe switch.  The PCIe switch communicates with the PC and passes packets to the chassis instead of passing the signals directly.  This makes the PC happy.  The downside is that the PCIe switch introduces some latency, which can affect performance.  For acquisition devices (digitizers) it's not very noticable.  For generation devices (arbs, digital out, etc.) it's more significant, probably 10 or 15%.

The part number is 779504-01.

i get the same bios error with or without the chassis connected.

i think i listed this in the other thread, the thread i started.

as long as there is a part we can use this is fine.

Its a cheap part conmpared to the 100k or so in intruments in controls as well as lost time this has caused.

ill get an order out today for this part.

It will be a few weeks to get it....

I presume we can return the old one too.

i hope this will new part is really fixing the problme you are reporting.

we get this error with or without the chassis connectd.

otherwise its another 2 weeks lost while the part is in purchase.

Jimmy,

I got some lines crossed jumping between the two threads.

For the error message described by riceowl in this thread (system is functional with PXI chassis connected and powered, "ERROR INITIALIZING PCI EXPRESS SLOT 3 NIC FAILURE" message otherwise) the other PCIe MXI card will work.

I'll post follow-up questions to your issue back in the original thread instead of hijacking this one.
