PXI-8187 "Operating System Not Found"

I have a PXI problem with our PXI-8187 that is similar to this post:

http://forums.ni.com/t5/PXI/PXI-8196-can-t-find-harddrive-quot-Fixed-Disk-0-quot-and-quot/m-p/159182...

I’ve reset the BIOS, replaced the BIOS battery backup with a new one, and tried three different PXI harddrives, and the error persists.

In my case I get a “Fixed Disk 0: IAH_K3A3”, so it seems to find the disk okay.   With the HD removed I don’t get the “fixed disk” message at all, but still get the “No OS” message.  All seems okay aside from it not booting.  I'm looking for ides on how to proceed before assuming the controller is broke, and gettign an RMA.

Hi willygc,

How old is this controller and has it ever worked? It is possible that re-installing the operating system could resolve this issue. What operating system are you using and do you have the back up CD for the controller?

Different controller same harddrive worked fine.  Controller is 6 years old I'm guessing.  The controller has been used nearlyconstantly for the last 5 years.

Hi willygc,

Were you running Windows or LabVIEW RT as your operating system on the PXI-8187?

If you have a USB DVD-ROM drive available and the Windows installation media, it could be worthwhile to try that before initiating an RMA, but honestly, it would surprise me to see that work based on your original information.

It sounds as if you have access to two PXI-8187s.  One last thing to verify is that the BIOS configuration is identical between the working and failing units since you mentioned resetting the defaults and changing the CMOS battery.

But if, as you stated, you check the CMOS configuration for consistency, and you've already tried 3 disks with Windows installed on a different PXI-8187, all of which worked, and none of those 3 disks work on the broken PXI-8187, then I think it is time to consider an RMA.

Hi willygc,

If the BIOS settings look good you may consider RMAing the controller. The following knowledge based article provides information on how to RMA a National Instruments product.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions regarding the controller or RMA process.
