Temperature Logging Recommendations

I am looking at building a temperature logging station that will save graphical and tabular data to an external PC. I am looking at a minimum of 32 TC Channels, but may want to expand in the future. Any suggestions on hardware/software I should look at?

Hi Kevin,

I have compiled a list of items to consider with each system part for this type of application.

1. Chassis: the choice between the 1010 and 1011 chassis comes down to how many boards or SCXI modules you are planning on putting in the system in the future. If you need more room for boards, then the 1010 is the better choice. If you want to have more SCXI options, then the 1011 is the better choice.

2. Controller: in every PXI system, there must be a controller. This can be an embedded controller - which is essentially a PC in a small form factor and the chassis can stand alone. Or you can have a MXI-3 controller where there is one board in the chassis and one in a separate standard PC. The second option imposed dependence on another system
where the first option is standalone.

3. DAQ board: I recommend an E Series DAQ board (ie 6052E), not the 435x. The E Series offers greater flexibility and will work with the new DAQ driver, NI-DAQmx. NI-DAQmx offers easier programming and a more efficient driver architecture. In addition, there are a variety of E Series boards to choose from based on # of channels, sampling rate, and resolution.

4. Signal conditioning: I highly recommend signal condition, in this case SCXI. The choice of the 1112 in fine for this specific application, but you're limited in it's usage should you want to connect another type of sensor in the future.

5. Software: This depends on your preferences. I highly recommend LabVIEW for its ease in integrating all these pieces seamlessly. If you are more familiar with text-based programming, then LabWindows/CVI or Measurement Studio would be the best options for you.

Have a great day!
