Internet based wireless cRIO connectivity.

Hello Folks,

Can anyone tell me what hardware they are using for remote connection to their cRIO's?  I am talking about connections spanning the US to the more remote regions, not cities.

Thanks,

HLB

Hi HLB,

Are you looking to use wifi or connect to a cell network?  If you want wifi, you can connect to a router or find a gaming adapter to connect to your cRIO (haven't done the second one, but they do it for FIRST).  If you want 3G, you can look at this company's website: http://www.sea-gmbh.com/en/products/compactrio-products/sea-crio-modules/?page=lin_einleitung.

Another option is to use a GSM gateway/modem, which provides an Internet/Ethernet connection to the cRIO over the 3G network.

One particular device we have tested is the Sierra Wireless AirLink™ Raven X, though there are many other similar products available.

Looks like the Raven X is about half the price of the SEA unit.  Does anyone know the typical (not peak) data rates for these systems?

Thanks,

HLB

Hi HLB,

I'm not sure what their data rates will be specifically.  You might be able to find additional information on their websites if they have manuals.  I would expect it to be close to the normal data rates of the 3G network that you're connecting to.  You can find information about the cRIO's data rates on it's Ethernet port here.  Since both - I believe - will have the cRIO sending data over it's Ethernet port to the 3G device, this would limit the data rate.  However, that data rate should be faster than the 3G network's data rate, so it shouldn't limit it in any way.
