USBCreate.exe Problems - format errors

I am evaluating some desk tops for RT application

I was having problems formatting a USB stick to evaluate the systems.

I have discovered that one of my backup USB drives attached while trying to use this RT format utility causes a format error from the RT utility.

The USB utility shows a select drive option window - but apparently the option has an issue with the extra usb drive attached.

My systems are both Dell machine one an E6400 and a second system is an Optiplex 760.  Both machines have 500gig WD USB drives attached as backups devices.

Removing the WD drive from the system allowed the USB utility to work as expected.

hi Nilkrub,

This sounds like it falls under a known issue. In Corrective Action Requests (CARs) 256237and 255645, having multiple USB drives can cause this unexpected behavior. What versions of LabVIEW, and Measurement and Automation Explorer do you have? Thanks!

Hi Tom,

How do you have your USB formatted? National Instruments recommends using a USB flash drive formatted in FAT32 file system. If you can give me as much information about your setup as possible, I will try replicating it on my end. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!

The USB drive was formatted with Fat32.

I use two systems.  Same results on both systems.

Both systems are Dell  one lap top one tower.  .

  • Laptop is a Latitude E6400, 2.5gz, 4g ram, C:=160gig
  • Tower - Optiplex 760 3ghz, 4g ram, c:=500g.
  • Both systems have external WD drives use for backup.
  • Both systems have 1 or 2 Dlink  port usb hubs. Laptop system has both 4 port and 7 port hubs attached.
  • Ethernet connection (wired) - lap top has wireless but disabled
  • Have cRIO 9162 attached most of the time with a 9201 analog module.
  • Standard applications (Office... ect)
  • using LV2010sp1 NI Developer Suite
  • Max is version  4.7.7 on lap top
  • first found problem trying to set up a NI 3110 for RT.

I tried to use several mfg of USB sticks with same result.

Thinking I had questionable USB sticks I used HP's format program - it reported no problmes.

I tried 128M sticks, 256m, 1G, 2G and 4G.  All with same result.

Best I could pin it down is the NI format application was detecting a Western Digital drive error  that

other packages did not detect or ignored and the NI applicaiton stopped format process.

When I removed the other usb devices attached to the systems the applicaiton worked fine.

No problem at this time.
