Connecting to OBD

I am new to ODB and am looking to get some info from OBD (just a few engine parameters like rpm) where can I find info on doing this with Labview 8.5 and NI hardware (usb-can?)

Hi Paul,

National Instruments has a pretty good Automative  Diagnostic Command Set that interprets OBD commands. There is more information about here and the manual can be located here. You can also download the OBD-II CAN Monitor Demo here that is a good demonstration of how this works.

Is there any way of knowing that the CAN and OBD will work with the specific cars I ma planning on testing with?

There is a set of OBD commands that are standard across all cars that support OBD and CAN.

The demo linked above shows this very well.
