Staying Logged in.

Hi,

I've noticed that when I first come into the Forum, I have logged in state, even though my setting are set so as to prompt for password.

I have also noticed that when I sign out sometimes I am prompt for comfirmation. When I log out, I get a refreshed main screen showing that I am not logged into the forum.

Next time I launch iexplorer and visit the forum, I will be logged on again without prompting for userid and password.

Is this a problem with the forum site or a local problem with my network.

Regards
Ray Farmer

I've seen this as well and I work on several computers, so I think this has to do with the site.

First off, let me apologize. This is a very confusing part of our system. There are technically two different systems that you are logging onto when posting on the forums (NI's and the host our forums, Lithium's). Therefore, we have tried to make the log in process as easy as possible, so that if you are logged onto NI.com and go the forums, you don't have to log on again.

This being said, here is what I recommend.

If you want to be prompted for your password:
1. Check the checkbox for prompt me for password
step 1: Click on 'modify profile' in the footer of all pages
step 2: Click on 'modify profile' on the my profile page
step 3: Click 'edit' on the section titled Your Information
step 4: Check the check box for 'prompt me for password'
step 5: Click on 'Next' button
And...
2. In the forums, set 'remember my password' to unchecked
step 1: Click on 'my profile' (right of the logout button)
step 2: Click on the 'preferences' tab
step 3: Uncheck checkbox for 'remember my password' in last selection in personal preferences
step 4: Then click Save Changes

***Note, each time your log in to ni.com's user profile, you will want to make sure that the check box below your password is check for 'prompt me for password'. Otherwise, your setting in your profile will switch back to don't prompt me for password.

***One other note: If your set up prompt your for a password and sign into the forums, then sign out, and don't close your browser, you will be able to sign back in with out entering your password.

If you DO NOT want to be prompted for your password:
1. Uncheck the checkbox for 'prompt me for password' on Modify profile page (this is the default)
Steps (see steps above)

I hope this helps and doesn't confuse you more.

Actually, the computers I work on are all mine, so I don't care about the auto-login, it's just that until a couple of days ago, I would only log in by clicking Sign In or replying to a question. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to become a veteran sooner (my guess is within the next 2-4 weeks).

Hi,

I haven't changed my profile for ages, but I have checked again and all the right boxes are in the correct state so that I should be prompted.

Also, I dont even have to be logged into the MyNI, initially, and when I come in to the forum using the links on the NI home page, I am automatically logged in to the forums.

I have even cleaned out all cookies, files amd history of the IE.

I have attached the login screen I see, once I have flushed IE. ( you will notice that there is no check box at this login screen)

Clearly something has changed, its just tracking down whats changed.

Hi Ray,

Yes, unfortunately, with our User Profile system, if you wipe out all your cookies then the next time you log in, it takes you to a login page that doesn't have the check box for 'prompt me for password'. Theoretically, someone should only see this page once, being the first time they log on/create UP.

However, when you get to this page and log on, it sets your check box back to default 'don't prompt me for my password'. Therefore, you need to go back into your profile and modify that selection to be 'prompt me for password'.

Does that help?

I just wanted to say that it looks like this has been resolved, at least from my angle. Now, I do have to click "sign in" or "reply" to log in. Actually, now that I think about it, this new setup was convenient.
Oh well, I guess it will take me a while longer to become a veteran...

Molly, I see this was changed again.
Until now, browsing to any page would log me in automatically (if I was logged in from that PC in the last 24 hours). Now, I have to click Sign In. I looked in the preference page and saw an option which looked like it should control this, but when I checked it, it didn't seem to make a difference. I still need to click Sign In.
I prefer to be signed in automatically, because that way I can immediately see where (and if) there are new messages and have the messages I read marked as read.

The option: Remember my login on this computer works for me.

If I close the browser, then come back here, I no longer need to sign in. WIth this option not checked, I have to log in every time under these same conditions.

tst, did you apply the changes after checking the box?

No, since I don't have an Apply button. I did save the changes, as evidenced by the fact that when I go into the prefrences page the option is checked, but that doesn't seem to help. If more than a few minutes pass after I close my browser, I have to click Sign In. I have verified this on 3 different computers, where this worked fine up until now, so this isn't a single computer\cookie issue. I'm fairly certain this happened because of whatever change was made to the forums during the weekend.
I don't know what that setting was like before (I persume it was checked), but when I first realized this was so and went into the prefrences page to have a look, it wasn't checked.
