what is the point of kudos in the breakpoint section

What is the point of giving kudos in the BreakPoint forum?

It totally undermines the value of kudos in the technical forums.

If you look through a few message it seems that BreakPoint contains far more kudos than any other forum.

Just a thought. :smileysurprised:

Nice thought.

It seems posting in breakpoint forum will give lot of kudos and the intention of the forum in helping othersto solve the problem may be reduced.

Dennis had mentioned this here, and it has been brought up by others as well. I agree that Kudos in these forums should be eliminated.

I thought I saw it somewhre before, but it has been a very small issue in too large a thread.

Time to bring it too the attention of people again to improve the status of kudo for people to recognise technical quality.

I don't see this as a problem.

If you go to an individual forum, you see the kudos statistics for that forum.

Kudos, are not one way. Since we can now see who gave kudos, I also use them as a quick "I have read your comments and I fully agree with them". There is no need to be stingy. It can even help to decide which solution is better, e.g. if one answer got kudos from top contributors while the other answer got only kudos from newcomers.

There are many social posts in the breakpoint where kudos are approriate. Keep them everywhere. 🙂

I hadn't noticed the difference in presentation for the different forums. It should be presented to the rigth in my opinion, but that's part of a poll.

I agree that having different statistics for each forum does help the distinguish the good/better.

About the "stingy" part of your reply, I don't see it, but that might be my lack of nuance when writing in english, or my dutch way of getting to the point.

 Stingy (definition)

It all depends what kind of statistics you want, "soccer" or "basketball". 🙂

In soccer, the goals are very rare, maybe 0-3 per match. So the statistics are tyically very coarse and the goal ratio can be 0..500%+ at the end.
In basketball, points happen quite often and the final scores differ typically by only a few percents.

If we give kudos liberally (instead of stingy), the statistics will get better because we have better resolution. A post with 2 Kudos might be statistically equivalent to a post with 1 kudos, but a post with 20 kudos is maybe more important than a post with 10 kudos because it has less sampling error.

If we only give kudos to that on-in-a-million top 99.99% percentile post, we never see kudos. If everybody would give kudos to e.g. the top 20% of posts (rated in their own, very personal opinion!), well end up with some real statistics. 🙂 It will also promote participation. 🙂

I like the idea of giving kudos liberally for posts that the reader agrees with. It some sort of poll. The reply with a lot of votes (kudos) is likely to have more value than replies with less kudos.

I would disagree with your statement.  I don't see kudos as being an indication that a post has more values than others because it received lots (or more) kudos.

My interpretation of multiple kudos given for an answer is an indication of "popularity" more than "value".  And I'm sure there are many interpretations of kudos.

For instance:  a post on how to communicate using the serial port may receive lots of kudos for various reasons, one of which may be that many found the post through a search.  Whereas a post with a solution (example) on how to do a highly complex task that few are able to assist with, may get 1 or no kudos at all.  The latter would have more technical value, whereas the first one would be more popular.

As for giving kudos, there are many reasons that they would be attributed, such as (and not even close to being limited to):

1.  thanks, I could read and understand your answer.

2. you saved me hours of searching!!! thanks!!

3. LOL!! that's a good one~~~

4. What you said needed to be said... kudos to you buddy!

5. BULLSEYE!  That is the correct answer.

6. thanks for eminding me of that...

7. You made my day!  Kudos to you!!

8. Oops..  I just wanted to see what that gold star thing in the corner was for..

9. what you said made me think..

10.  I like your nick.. And your icon..  I'll just go kudos crazy..

11.  Wow... That's an interesting nugget..

12. Can you post more (cartoons)?

and so on...  there are as many reasons for giving kudos as there are people in the forum..

And all valid reasons to whoever gives them..  But do they add value?  I dunno...  I doubt it, but maybe time will tell..

I agree, and that'sm why I'm not kudoing you here (at least, I had many occasions in tech forums to do this with Saverio Smiley Very Happy )
