I cannot run NI Example Finder

I am using Labview 7.1 on Windows XP. When I first install the Labview I was able to run the Example Finder and see the examples. But after a few days of installation, the Example Finder started not to respond when start it. I see the user interface but cannot reach and see any examples and when I click on somewhere on the interface it says (Not responding).
What can I do to solve the problem? I tried to repair it, but it didn't solve the problem, then I re-installed it and everything is the same... I have also Norton Internet Security running on my computer. I permitted all the NI programs installed on my computer to pass through the Firewall.

Hello MSARIKOC,

For the Example Finder to run properly, the NI Service Locator and the Help Server should be running. These services open TCP/IP ports to communicate with NI Example Finder and the LabVIEW Help. So I would suggest restarting these services.

You can restart the Service Locator by opening up the Windows Services window by going to Start » Control Panel » Administrative Tools » Services. In the list of services you should see: NI Service Locator. To restart this service, right-click on the entry and select Stop. Wait a minute until the service has stopped and then right-click and select Start. Restart LabVIEW and see if you can launch the example finder.

In order to enable the HelpServer, navigate to C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.0\resource\system and run the HelpServer.llb. On the front panel of the Set HelpServer Config Settings__NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS.vi you will see a boolean control to enable the server. Turn this switch on and run the VI. The LED indicator in the HelpServer.vi will turn on.

Also, try the suggestions given here (last 3 lines):

You do have the examples installed at C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\examples, correct?

Best of luck!

I tried your suggestions, but the problem still consists.
Sometimes, when I wait after clicking Examples 5-10 minutes it works. That happens maybe once in a day...

Hi MSARIKOC,

Have you tried disconnecting your personal firewall? If the same problem happens even after you disconnect the firewall, I would suggest completely uninstalling LabVIEW (including the Run-time engine) and doing a fresh reinstall again. Do you have any other NI software that uses NI Example Finder (like CVI)?

Also, following the URL given in this document What Is The NI Service Locator And How Do I Troubleshoot? get a view of the connections that are being made to the NI Service Locator and see if you get a similar report (HelpServer, NIExampleFinderServer entries might be of interest).

Good luck!

I've been fighting this problem for a few hours. My latest step was to launch Task Manager after I had launched NIExampleFinder. I then set NIExampleFinder.exe Affinity for only the first processor and closed Task Manager. After 5-6 seconds, NIExampleFinder responded and I can go about my business. I realize this does not cure the problem and this must be done each time NIExampleFinder is launched, but there are fixes on the internet for this issue as well. (Newer editions of Firefox give me this same problem).

I tried many things, but the problem is going on with my computer.
But when I try to install and run it on the other WindowsXP platforms it works well.
So I decided It is something about my computer, I gave up to try to solve.
Now I don't use ExampleFinder, when I need an example I directly go to the example directory and open the example from there.
If you find a solution, please send a feedback to this message.

Note: I tried everthing in this discussion and much more to solve this problem.

Hi,

Finally the best answer comes from DMILO.
In fact, it seems the application works as if there were two processors on the computer?
In the task manager, it is possible to define the Affinity of th NIExampleFinder task and to ask to work on only one CPU...
Then it works! But it is necessary to repeat the action each time you want to use the application.
    It looks quite strange.

Now this is identify, we should ask to a NI ingenier.

Best luck!

Hi,

The problem has now been solved on my computer. In fact, it comes from the Pentium 4 processor: the hyperthreading should be turn off in order to allow NIExampleFinder to work.
