LV8 and why i hate it.

Hi Vr6...,

I have gone back through all of your postings and  can not argue with anything you have said.

My initial reaction to LV8 was similar, but ....

It's growin on me.

I do like the anotated graph.

The new math stuff seems to triple LV's prior capabilities.

I second Tbob's comments re:LV8 features.

There are fixes for a lot of bugs.

The only new bugs I have heard of are in the new features.

I have to say, "Not bad for a dot zero version".

OK, but let's consider the source.  He is a novice user, who got blindsided.  His situation demanded a new computer and new software.  What he got in the mail was LV8.  He is struggling to debug code in 7.x with not a lot of help or training, then the program he inherited was broken in LV8.  This post was the result of a rant.  I remember having similar concerns when LV4 released and re-organized my palettes and forced me to change the way I did things.  I was very unhappy, but I grew.  I think we should not bash him for what he could have done, rather inform him on what he can do to remedy the situation.  My original posting was meant to try and defuse the rant and make the posting  more constructive.  He posted a more detailed post asking for help resolving his problem, and I believe he is up and running.

There are always going to be things that we do not like as software is up-reved.  Take your pick of the product involved.  There are some great things in LV8 but there are also things that are annoying as heck.  I dislike the express VIs immensly.  Specifically for two reasons...There is always a running process in the background when using express VIs.  If you use enough of them, your development machine bogs down.  NI made good strides to resolve this in the upgrade to 8 but the problem still persists.  2nd, all express VIs are reentrant... enough said on that for good and bad.

NI, to date, has done a poor job documenting the project explorer window (PhEW).  I believe part of this is due to a last minute change eliminating GOOP.  How are we suppose to be using the PhEW?  I find myself starting to develop utilities for giving the PhEW enhanced capabilities, like auto-indexing of VIs in a directory,  PhEW refresh to allow me to check in/out using other tools etc, but this has proven to be very time consuming.
I am sure others are doing the same.

I embrace the future, and am actively using LV8, dealing with things I do not like and taking advantage of the many things that I do like/love.

My $.02

A rant indeed. I will admit i was angry and posted instantly.  I should have waited at least 24 hours to vent.

Everyone needs to vent.

I do it a lot. Everyone looks over it here because we know things do get very frustrating.

Well said Paul,

As for NI becoming another Msuff...  I hope not..  That would be horrible...  I don't think it will happen 😉

I haven't seen LV8, yet.  Been too busy with too many things, plus we're developping on CVI.

As for LV7 - 7.1, I also dislike Express VI's whereas my former collegue (and friend) loves them.  It's all a matter of tase.  But I do appreciate the fact that I have a choice and continue my old "caveman" ways 😉  LV is fantastic and I hope to explore the new features of LV8 soon!
