abnormal motor noise analysis

Task: To analyze gear condition in running motor using PCI 4474
What would be the best way to differentiate between smooth operation and an abnormal sound? Any help would be appreciated.

We were doing this about 25 years ago on rear axles using a spectrum
analyzer, if I remember correctly. There may be an SAE paper out there that
will give you some ideas...

I also did something like this 20+ years ago. We looked at the spectrum of several sets of good gearboxes and several sets of bad ones. Once we determined the differences we developed an instrument with filters for the significant frequency bands. We actually had three different problems we could detect (bad bearings, gear tooth misalignment, and burr or gouge on a tooth). Each produced a different sound.
