Windows XP hangs at shutdown with Lookout installed?

Windows XP hangs at "Windows is shutting down" once Lookout is installed with the keyboard driver.  Would this have anything to do with the fact that the computer is a new Dell machine with a USB keyboard?

Further information:  I'm using Lookout 5.1.  I'm going to try loading Lookout 5.1 in the same manner, but with a PS2 keyboard.  If that doesn't help, I'm going to try loading Lookout 5.1 without the keyboard driver to see what happens.

I've used Lookout 5.1 on another Windows XP machine without this problem, so I'm not sure what might be causing it.

Hi,

One the machine where you're having this issue, try uninstalling just the Keyboard-filter driver.  Can do this by going into Add/Remove Programs and then by selecting "Modify" option for Lookout (under NI Softaware).  If the issue exists even after uninstalling, then this Keyboard-filter is ruled out.

On the machine where it works, do you have the same setup?  As in, the same style of USB keyboard?

I quickly tried installing the filter and it seems to work fine, i.e., I am able to shutdown without any errors.  However, my keyboard, though a USB one, it's hooked into the PS2 via an adapter.

Regards,

-Khalid

Upon further testing, I found that Windows shuts down normally when the computer is used with a PS2 keyboard, whether the Keyboard Driver is installed or not.  When using the OEM USB keyboard, Windows hangs at the "Windows is shutting down" message unless the keyboard driver has been un-installed and the computer rebooted first.

Sounds like a bug to me --  Dear AEs, take a note!

A workaround would be to get a simple USB-PS2 adapter, and use the good-old PS2 port on your machine.

I am using one similar to this:

Thanks,

PS:  By the way, I am not endorsing the above product or the company -- just wanted to give an example.

Thanks for your help.  Now if only I could get to someone at NI!.  I tried to e-mail an engineer, but the web page insists on asking for a Lookout software version number and won't let me enter one.

How do I get to these people if it won't let me in?

I'm not sure what the problem may be trying to create a service request for Lookout -- we get new ones everyday so you may just need to try again -- are you starting from this page?

As far as the Keyboard Filter problem, this is a known issue with the Keyboard Filter and it has been recommended that you disable the Keyboard Filter if you plan on using Lookout or LabVIEW DSC on a system that will be shutdown periodically and has a USB keyboard.  The filter is intended primarily to restrict access to the system when used as an HMI, but it is often unnecessary.

Would using the USB - PS/2 adaptor with your original keyboard still give you warranty problems? I have resubmitted this issue to R&D, but a quick fix is probably unlikely.
