32bit / 64bit PCI slots

Hello,

A general question that has come to my attention concerning NIDAQ cards.

We use the E-series MIO-16E-1 and DIO96 cards, historically in ISA/AT bus but of the last few years in PCI bus versions.

We have recently ordered a number of high end rack PCs which have a combination of 32bit PCI and 64bit PCI slots.

What I have found is that it is not possible to mount a 32bit card in a 64bit slot, despite being advised that you can do.... (not by NI I wish to add).

The reason is to do with keyways and voltages.....

In a regular 32bit / 5V PCI slot, there is a key at position 50/51 in the connector. The PCI cards have a small cut out in the corresponding position.

The PCI spec (at least rev 2.1) also provides for a keyway at po
sition 12/13 for 3.3V 32bit cards, however these are not in widespread use.

In the case of a 5V / 32bit PCI card, position 12/13 is normal ground. Visa versa in the case of a 3.3V card at posn 50/51.


For 64bit PCI slots the situation is more complex. In addition to having extra contacts above position 62, they contain both the 3.3V and 5V keyways at positions 12/13 and 50/51.

It is the keyway at posn 12/13 in the 64bit slot that will prevent a 5V / 32bit card from being inserted, and this is our problem today.

What we would ideally like is NIDAQ cards to progressively support insertion into either 3.3V or 5V slots, of either 32bit or 64bit as the PC industry
is moving in this direction and rather too fast for our liking !

Can you please advise me if and when you will support this idea, sooner rather for, the MIO-16E-1 and DIO96 cards.....

Is was able to find the page with the info you provided, many thanks.

The good news is that at least the newer IMAQ borads are keyed for 3.3V and 5V operation.

The real question is when will we see this on the E-series DAQ boards ?

Hi Mark,

I'm a test engineer trying to use an NI DIO 96 card in a 64 bit machine however the issue I am having is in the driver. I haven't been able to install the NIDAQ32.dll and was hoping that you might be able to lead me to where I could locate a 64 bit driver suitable for use with LabVIEW 2009. I see in the forum that you were having issues with the asssociated 32 or 64 bit slots and was hopin that you might have some ideas on the driver. Any help is appreciated.

The 64 bit driver for NI DAQ cards is DAQmx. Simply click on the support tab at the top of the page.
