For solving nonlinear equations, methods that converge rapidly to the solution are unreliable because convergence may not occur unless started close enough to the actual solution. On the other hand, the more reliable methods are slower. The Brent method is a hybrid method that combines both the safety of the bisection method and the rapid convergence of inverse quadratic interpolation. |
