Warning about skchui.dll

Hey parkerfly,

I brought our R&D team into the loop on this issue.  We have a potential solution available for you.  Please create a phone or email Support Request on our website so that we may discuss this further.  You may reference this forum post in your SR creation.

We would like to emphasize that this is not a fatal error; it is in fact merely a warning that memory leaks could occur given the configuration of your system and the presence of this version of the skchui.dll.  This will not prevent you from developing sequences, and this will not prevent you from creating TestStand deployments.

Hi

I am in contact with Microsoft to get more information specifically -
1. Why does the workaround described in the Microsoft KB not work? (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896429)
2. Are there other products which install 'skchui.dll' which exhibits the leak?
3. How can our customers get the version of the skchui.dll that fixes this issue?

To everyone who has reported that this workaround does not work

1. Can you please post the version or versions of skchui.dll on your machine.
2. Do you have other versions of skchui.dll on your machine?

Skchui.dll should be located at the following location - <program files>\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\INK\skchui.dll

Details of the warning
TestStand uses Internet explorer's webBrowser control  to display its report. When TestStand creates an instance of the webBrowser control it loads skchui.dll if present. If the DLL version is 1.0.1038, then every time we navigate to a new report it leaks 3 GDI objects.

National Instruments did contact MS in the past and Microsoft KB (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;896429) was created because we contacted Microsoft. Clearly something has changed and I am in contact with MS to find out what has changed.
I will post once I have more information

I have version 1.0.1038.0 on my computer, located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\INK, and it is the only copy on my computer...

These forum members have mentioned that they are experiencing this behavior even after following the instructions on Microsoft's KB.

Thanks!

Hi

I just spoke to to MS and 'Parkerfly' and got this issue resolved on his machine.
'Parkerfly' - thank you for your time to help resolve this issue.

Fix for this issue - Customers not only have remove the "Handwriting" feature for Microsoft office but they also have
to remove it from all other office 2003 based products like Microsoft Visio 2003, Microsoft Project 2003 etc.

Please post to this forum if this issue is not yet resolved after removing the "Handwriting" feature from other Microsoft office 2003 products also.
Microsoft is working on updating the KB related to this issue as we speak.

Also please re-enabled TestStand's option to report object leaks if you turned it off because of this issue.
Option can be found under - Configure -> Station Options -> Preferences -> Debug Options -> Report Object Leaks

Thanks Anand.

I dont think this is a real problem for as our testand will not install the offending software  but I need to fix it on my development computer.

We are not running Teststand at this time as I am just running the demo (I have it on order) .

WinXP pro, Office 2007, LabVIEW 8.6.1, Teststand 4.1.1,  Skchui.dll version 1.0.1038  (!#$%!)

Okay, well the last post prior to mine was a year and a half ago.  I'm running WinXP pro with Office 2007 (the one with the Vista "look and feel".  Blech!)  I tried the fix described in Microsoft article id 896429, but I don't have the same prompts.  I go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs.  I see "2007 Microsoft Office System".  Click on "Change", select "Add or Remove Features", then click on "Continue".  There is no "advanced customization of applications", nor can I find anything named "Alternative User Input" anywhere in the menu tree.  According to others here, if I just delete or rename Skchui.dll, it's likely to "fix" itself and return under the same name.

Anyone had to deal with this?  How'd you fix it?

Mark,

I can understand your frustration.  In the searching that I have done, I found that Office 2007 does not include handwriting support.

In the Microsoft knowledge base, it lists the products that the problem and workaround apply to.  You can find the list below (I just copied it).  Some of these are not part of office core, and so will be listed as their own separate products in Add/Remove Programs.  Can you check if you have one of these software packages installed?  If so, you should be able to run the instructions listed in the knowledge base on that product and fix the issue.
