Power fault

The Roborio's power light is red. We believe that it is a power fault. We have cleaned off the rio, but the issue has persisted. We can't figure out the issue.

Hi NathanWilson,

My name is Jessica, with NI. I see your RoboRIO is showing a red power light. These are generally caused by metal shavings falling inside the case. You can clear this by trying any of the following steps:

  1. Turning the roboRIO upside down and shaking it vigorously.
  2. Vacuuming out the ports on the roboRIO.
  3. Use canned air or compressed air to clear the hardware pinouts.
  4. Check with a flashlight for material making contact in the port pinouts.

Are you using a RoboRIO 1.0 or 2.0?

Other than the Power LED, have you seen any strange behavior?

We have tried all of those troubleshooting tips on multiple occasions. None of them seemed to work.

We are using a RIO 2.0, and no new issues have arisen. The RIO will: turn on, the power light will flash green, the power light will then turn red.
