For TestStand Sequence Analyzer, all the results information/reports include status, user, computer, file, time and results.  However there's nothing to link to what version of the sequence file you actually analyzed (it just has the path to the file analyzed).  It would be very helpful for compliance tracking if the results/reports also included the sequence file version.

I can add my own test to log this as information, but it would probably be helpful to others if it was included as part of the results header information.

It would be nice when entering in the Find: control to beable to pop open the Variable dialog (as in the expression editor) to select variable names. It could be linked to the Limit Search to: control. Like wise on the Replace control when that window appears.

I know you have that drop down facility on this control but that only remembers what you have previously entered.

I would like to see commands like AllOf, AnyOf, AND, OR, etc. work with boolean arrays as inputs.

Custom TestStand UI suggestion.

I would like the same functionality as with Sequence Editor when double clicking on Sequence Call step (already configured) and it goes into the Subsequence directly and you can view the SubSequence.

I would like to see that functionality in the TestStand Custom UI when double clicking on the Sequence Call step with Sequence View Manager and it goes into the Subsequence so it can it viewed.

This would come in handy when debugging a subsequence and setting break points in the subsequence and then viewing variables during execution.

It is common to want to place a shortcut to a TestStand User Interface or even a TestStand sequence file on the Windows Desktop for each user of a computer.  This is done by placing a shortcut in the Windows All Users Desktop directory.  Currently, the TestStand Deployment Utility only allows you to create a shortcut on the current user's Desktop.  It would be really nice if the TestStand Deployment Utility allowed you to also create shortcuts on the Windows All Users Desktop so that everyone using the computer could see this shortcut on his or her Desktop.

When you devevlop in TestStand, you may have some tools that you can use to automate some developments actions but it's not easy to share of use it in TestStand.

My best way is to customize my Tools menu but it's not user friendly.

Since you introduce the Quickdrop in TS2019, can we imainge that you can support addon to have access more easily to developpers tools ?

Type Files have a feature to combine files from an install: files prefixed with 'Install_' get merged file existing file (explained here).

I am building a ModelPlugin, and I would like it to be enabled and configured in the Result Processing after install (users should intentionally opt out of using the installed plugin instead of opt-in). The settings are saved in ResultProcessing.cfg, and there is no merge feature available. Placing my own ResultProcessing.cfg will remove any previous settings the user had configured (or other plugins). I would like to be able to place a 'Install_ResultProcessing.cfg' that gets merged upon TestStand launch similar to type files.

Hello,

It would be nice to have a tool such "Trace Toll kit" for TestStand, in order to be abble to view the currently loaded modules.

When you have big Sequences, with many loops, you can get memory problems. Smiley Sad

Then you'll have to play with the load options, the results recording, the on the fly reporting .... Smiley Mad

It should be nice to had a tools which could show us the memory used by every modules, structures, Globals, fileGlobals, parameters, locals ...

So it would be easier to point to the main memory consumers  !!!! Smiley Wink

Or better ... let TestStand access the 64bit world Smiley Happy !

Get rid of the ActivX architecture !Smiley Wink

Memory management should not influence Test creation ...

Thanks a lot.

To change the adapter settings every time instead of traversing from configure tools menu it would be extremely convienent to launch the adapter  configuration dialog box by just  double clicking on its icon available in the insertion palette.

Present implementation :

Left single click on icon sets it as the active adapter. (Requires 4 clicks)

New request :

Double click this to launch the adapter configuration dialog box.(Requires one double click)

Currently, for limits in numeric limit tests, I am using TestStand variables, values of which are stored in configuration file. These variables are directly set in limits fields, but units - are specified directly, explicitly.

It would be nice to have possibility assign to Units field variable, which value will be unit itself. Then, units for measurements could be also possible to store in configuration file. But, unfortunatelly, now it is not possilbe to assign to units expression or variable.

I have extended the multi-numeric step type to use the string and Boolean comparisons.  We have several tests that require string verification to match the exact string and to verify the string format. Therefore I have added the ability for the multi-numeric step type to use string comparisons, including regular expression for string testing.

When I get called to look at an issue that has occurred with a test, the account logged into TestStand is typically a restricted user (i.e. Operator). Since the Operator account has very limited options, in order to really do much immediate troubleshooting I need to stop the test and re-run it in the Administrator account. At best this is inconvenient and inefficient if the spot the error occurred is late in the test. However, it is extremely frustrating when it's an intermittent run-time error and I can't do any real-time debug because Operator is logged in. The only real alternative I can think of (when the problem is intermittent) is to leave it logged in as Administrator so I can debug whenever it happens to occur. This is not really an acceptable practice in most cases.

It would be fantastic if there were an override that let's an Administrator provide the proper credentials to perform the desired task that would normally be off-limits to the Operator. The basic premise of this suggestion is similar to the functionality within Windows; if you try to connect to a secured location or perform a task that requires administrator privileges, a dialog box pops up asking you to enter authorized credentials.

I run into many situations where I wish this feature was present. The issue is not always within TestStand (could be a database connection issue, etc.), but it is TestStand that throws the error and in Operator mode the only option is "Run Cleanup". Significant time, effort, frustration, and efficiency could be saved if I could simply enter my credentials as an administrator to perform the tasks I need to do.

On an unrelated side note, I find it humorous that "TestStand" is considered a misspelled word when using the forum spell checker.  🙂

TestStand should use Workspace and Projects properly when determining the folders and files used for deployment.  It should not default to reproducing the on disk source structure for your deployment.

  1. I develop in a folder called: C:\Development\ProjectFolder\.
  2. I create a workspace, a project, and add the ProjectFolder to the project.
  3. I load the workspace into the Deployment Utility.
  4. In the Installer Options tab I set my Default Installation Base Directory to "Windows Volume (C:)"
  5. In the Installer Options tab I set my Default Installation Subdirectory to "ProductionSW"

I would expect the Project Folder and its contents to be the ROOT of my deployment placed in the C:\ProductionSW\ folder.  My resulting installer should create C:\ProductionSW\ProjectFolder\

However the Distributed File Tree Views show:

View Workspace

  • Workspace.tsw
    • Project.tpj
      • ProjectFolder
        • source Files and Folders

View Source

  • C:
    • Development
      • ProjectFolder
        • source Files and Folders

View Build Preview

  • Installation Directory
    • Development
      • ProjectFolder
        • source Files and Folders

By default when I build the deployment it installs my software at C:\ProductionSW\Development\ProjectFolder\

The Development folder is not in the workspace or project.  It is not referenced in any of the source files (as all paths are relative).  I understand why it's in the View Source as that's where it resides on disk.  However, the workspace/project should be used as the basis for the deployment not where things are on disk.

The source starts at ProjectFolder and that is what I expect to be deployed to my Default Installation Base Directory\Default Installation Subdirectory folder.

If the workspace and project aren't used to define your project code then what good are they in the Deployment Utility?

Hello everybody,
it should be possible to mark a sequence file for a time based autosave during development of the file.

Also possible would be a temp file which is saved automatically, so no data will be lost, if TestStand or the computer crashes during the development of a sequence file.

That would be nice 🙂

I’m trying to work with the tool Requirement Gateway. I started with some examples which are contained in install packet of this tool. I need to connect Gateway with HTML document and manage coverage with another HTML document. I managed to get from HTML document load the list of requirements to Gateway tool. If I tried to open the particular requirement from Gateway than the HTML document was opened on first page always. I can’t set the Gateway for opening the HTML document on particular place, when is described requirement.

My point of view is make some modification for better connection Gateway tool with internet browser.

Currently you can right click the insertion palette and change the position / menu items that are shown / hidden in the insertion palette from a context based dialog box. (can also be done from the same box in the type palettes view).

It would be useful to be able to modify this programatically.

Currently you can only programatically play with the typepalettefilelist from the engine property object and insert new ones or remove old ones.

If a sequence file is loaded that has a step type in it that is not currently loaded by a type palette file, then it shows up in the insertion palette (as it should do), but if the testexec.ini file says this should be set to "hide" then it is hidden.

Thanks

I would love native support of regular expressions (PCRE regex) in TestStand expressions, with the ability to output captured groups.

For instance, hypothetically:

Number EvaluateRegex(String string, String pattern, Number indexToSearchFrom = 0, Boolean ignoreCase = False, Array CapturedGroups)

I have successfully implemented a sequence to perform Microsoft's version of regex evaluation...

Regex_NET.png

...but it takes several steps and uses Microsoft's flavor of regular expression syntax. This is frustrating for me because I already use moderately complex PCRE expressions all the time, and Microsoft's syntax varies enough to present an additional learning curve. It's also much more cumbersome that just using a native TestStand function within an expression.

My idea is similar to this one, but I'm looking for a function. Whenever people ask for regex support on the forums, it seems that workarounds are presented using simple string functions, but these don't cover my more advanced use cases.

Since day one of using TestStand I have been looking for this feature and I have always wondered why it is absent.

Thank you,

Mr. Jim

A customer noticed odd behavior when modifying custom data types in TestStand.  After reproducing the behavior, I think it's a better product suggestion because it looks as if what the customer notices is more of a design choice implemented by our software developers than a feature that is not behaving correctly.

The customer, David, created a custom type called DavidsType which was composed of a container and within this container was a collection of strings:

image1.jpg

He then created an instance of this type in his DavidTest.seq file under the file global variables.  He called the instance MyType.

image2.jpg

Then he goes back to the Types pane and modifies the structure of the custom data type to include another string with a default value of "C".

image3.jpg

However, when he goes back to view the already created instance of his data type (MyType) within the variables pane of DavidTest.seq, he notices that only the structure is updated and not the default value.

image4.jpg

New instances of the custom data type, however, do show up with the default value as shown below by MyType_Instance2.

image5.jpg

The problem is that the customer has many instances of this type that already exist within his code.  He would currently have to create new instances of each type to load the new default value or he would have to hunt down all of the current instances and enter the default value of the new string manually.  I understand that the structure is updated, but shouldn't we build/provide an option to scan current instances of the custom data type and update default values for the elements that are new to a custom data type's structure?

I understand that it is expected behavior to load the default values of a custom data type only with a new instance of said custom data type, but I think we should provide an option/tool/function to our customers which updates all preexisting instances with the default value as well as the change in structure to the current types.  Currently only the structure is updated with a null string.

Hello,

It would be nice if there were an easy means of programmatically loading a database schema for result processing.

Here's my context for asking:

We have a custom database schema that must be loaded on all of our stations and we'd prefer that it "just works" when our customized database result processing plugin is loaded.

I managed to accomplish this by studying the format of TestStandDatabaseSchemas.ini and writing a parser to insert our schema as necessary. This was a bit painful, though, and the possibility of the format changing without notice has crossed my mind.

Thanks as usual to the R&D team.  (Assuming this idea gets some traction!  Smiley Wink)

Kind regards,

Mr. Jim

We found a need to customize the NI version of this step to give more functionality.  Our edits updates to allow multiple response text boxes (up to 10), and we added an option to configure the response to be a list controls rather than simple strings. Just added a Boolean to switch to list box and then the user just gives comma separated list of options with the default item first as the initial response string.

Modified Message Popup

This is a simple change to the step and allows far greater flexibility for the step type (also it was easy to make the step upgradeable from the exiting step version maintainign the functionality if one or no string responses being used).

These features are very useful for collecting all UUT information during PreUUT rather than having to throw up popup after popup or create a custom module with a popup in it.  Would be great if these features could be included in the standard NI step.
